Serial number tracking

Track individual units by unique serial number for full per-unit traceability.

Updated June 21, 20261 min read

Serial number tracking identifies every individual unit of an item by a unique serial. Use it for high-value or warrantied goods where you need to know exactly where each unit goes.

Turn on serial tracking

  1. Open the item under Inventory → Items.
  2. Enable Serial number tracking.
  3. Save. Each unit of this item now requires its own serial.

A serialized item always moves in whole units. You can’t hold or sell a fractional quantity of a serial-tracked item.

Capture serials when stock arrives

When you receive a serialized item, enter one serial number per unit — type them in, scan them, or paste a list. Fiddle checks that each serial is unique so the same number can’t be received twice.

Select serials when stock leaves

When the unit ships on a sales order, transfers between locations, or is consumed by a work order, pick the specific serial(s) leaving stock. The status of each serial updates as it moves.

Status Meaning
In stock On hand and available
Reserved Committed to an order
Shipped Sent to a customer

Look up a serial

Search any serial number to see its full movement history — when it was received, which order it shipped on, and where it is now.

Lots vs. serials

A lot tracks a batch of units together; a serial tracks one unit. Need both? See lot tracking to combine batch and per-unit traceability.
