Prepare your import file

Format a clean spreadsheet that imports without errors.

A clean source file is the difference between a smooth import and hours of fixing errors. Always start from Fiddle’s template for the record type you’re importing.

Start from the template

  1. In the Import app, choose your record type and download the template.
  2. Fill in your data under the existing column headers — don’t rename or reorder them.
  3. Save the file as CSV or XLSX.

Formatting rules

  • Keep one record per row and one value per cell.
  • Fill every required column; optional columns can be left blank.
  • Use measurement units, locations, and item types that already exist in your account.
  • Enter dates in a consistent format (for example, YYYY-MM-DD).
  • Remove currency symbols and thousands separators from number columns.

Trim leading and trailing spaces. " SKU-100" and “SKU-100” are treated as different values and are a common cause of failed lookups.

Use a unique key

Each item needs a unique SKU, and customers and suppliers need a unique name. Fiddle uses these keys to match rows, so duplicates inside your file will fail or overwrite.

Re-running an import matches on the unique key — so fixing and re-uploading updates the same records rather than creating duplicates.

Next steps

When your file is ready, continue to Import inventory items.
