Import inventory items

Bulk-create items with SKUs, units, and starting stock from a spreadsheet.

Items are usually the first records you import, because customers, suppliers, pricing, and orders all reference them. Make sure your locations and item types exist first.

Prepare the file

  1. In the Import app, choose Items and download the template.
  2. Enter one item per row with a unique SKU.
  3. Fill the required columns: SKU, name, and measurement unit.
  4. Add optional details — description, item type, barcode, and reorder point.

Set starting stock

If your template includes a starting-quantity column, enter on-hand stock per location:

  • Use a location that already exists in your account.
  • Leave the quantity blank for items you’ll receive later through a purchase order.

Starting stock creates an opening balance, not a purchase. To bring in incoming stock, use a purchase order instead.

Run the import

  1. Upload your file and map columns if your headers differ from the template.
  2. Review the preview — Fiddle flags duplicate SKUs and unknown units.
  3. Run the import and confirm the row counts.

Test with 5–10 rows first to confirm your mapping before importing thousands of items.

Next steps

With items in place, continue to Import customers and Import suppliers and supplier pricing.
