Create a bill of materials (BOM)
Define the components and quantities needed to make a product.
A bill of materials (BOM) is the recipe for a product: which components go into it and how much of each. Work orders use the BOM to know what to consume.
Build the BOM
- Open the finished-good item under Inventory → Items.
- Go to its Bill of Materials tab and click Edit BOM.
- Add each component item and the quantity required to make one unit of output.
- Save.
Define quantities per one unit of the finished good. When you create a work order for 500 units, Fiddle scales every component automatically.
Multi-level BOMs
A component can itself have a BOM (a sub-assembly). Fiddle supports nested BOMs, so you can model intermediate products — for example a base mixture that’s then packaged into several finished SKUs.
Costing
The BOM rolls up component costs into an estimated build cost for the finished good. Keeping component costs current keeps your production costing accurate.
Next step
With a BOM in place, create a work order to actually produce the item.
