Glossary of Fiddle terms

Plain-language definitions of the inventory and manufacturing terms used across Fiddle.

Items and identifiers

SKU

A stock keeping unit — the unique code that identifies a specific product you track.

Item

Anything you stock, buy, make, or sell. Each item has its own stock figures and SKU.

Variant

A version of an item that differs by an attribute such as size or color. Each variant has its own SKU and stock.

Lot

A batch of an item received or produced together, tracked as a group for traceability and expiry.

Serial

A unique identifier for a single unit, used when you need to track items individually.

Stock and locations

Location

A warehouse, store, or place where stock is held. Each location has its own quantities.

On hand

The quantity physically in your possession right now.

Available

On hand minus reserved — what you can still sell or use.

Reserved

On-hand stock committed to a sales order or work order.

Incoming

Stock on open purchase orders that hasn’t been received yet.

Reorder point

The available level at which Fiddle flags an item to be restocked.

Documents and processes

Purchase order

A document telling a supplier what to buy; raises incoming stock.

Sales order

A document recording what a customer is buying; reserves stock.

Work order

An instruction to make a product, consuming components and producing finished goods.

BOM

A bill of materials — the recipe of components needed to make one unit of a product.

Batch record

A document capturing the steps and sign-offs for a regulated production run.

Fulfillment

The pick, pack, and ship process that sends a sales order out the door.
